Nottingham: Messages
(2005-19)





This is a project documenting messages found on the walk into Nottingham city centre (through The Meadows) between 2005 and 2019. I never knew who was writing these, but I appreciated their tone and scope. The comments often critically appraised recent events and activities in the area in a way that seemed to assume everyone was on the same page about them. This meant they could be quite cryptic. They could also be very straightforward. ‘IDIOT’ written above a pool of vomit found one Sunday morning remains one of my favourites. ‘STOP IT’ and ‘STOP SPYING’ would sometimes appear after I’d been around, taking pictures. I have tried to either make work about them or to incorporate them into my work on numerous occasions. It never works. They are their own thing.
